In your browser, search for an article in a database. Click the Zotero icon at the top of your browser to save a citation from that page. It will look different depending on the number and types of citations listed. While writing your paper, use the Zotero tab in Word to insert citations and a bibliography. In Zotero, go to the Cite → Word Processors pane of Zotero preferences, click the “Reinstall Microsoft Word Add-in” button, and then restart Word. If you don't see the option to reinstall the Word Add-in, open Tools → Add-ons and ensure that Zotero Word for Mac Integration is present and enabled. Uninstall Zotero and Browser Connectors Use your computer's add / remove programs function or in IOS, drag the program to the trash to uninstall it. For Browser Connectors, open your browser settings or options for plugins or add-ons and select the remove/uninstall button next to Zotero Connector.
If you have installed Zotero on a lab or shared machine, you may want to take these steps to protect your data when you have completed your work.
- Backup / Sync your Zotero library.Most of us have automatic syncing turned on; you can also click the sync arrow on the Zotero task pane to force a manual sync to your account at zotero.org.
Not interested in using Zotero online storage? You can also navigate to where the ibrary is stored on the local computer and copy the files to a USB drive or storage option. - Remove automatic syncing to your account. This will leave the program and your data directory, but prevent any other users from altereing the citations stored in your library.
Under the Edit > Preferences > Sync, remove your credentials, uncheck 'Sync automatically' and save. - Delete your data directory. This is the directory on your computer where Zotero stores your personal library of citations and documents.
Go to your Zotero settings Edit> Preferences > Advanced Tab > Files and Folders tab to find the current location of your data directory or view a list of default locations.

- For Browser Connectors, open your browser settings or options for plugins or add-ons and select the remove/uninstall button next to Zotero Connector.
Zotero Standalone is an application that you can download from zotero.org. It plugs into your browser of choice, and comes with connectors for three browsers: Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.
You must have Zotero Standalone open to use the Firefox, Chrome, and Safari capture icons. (If you don't, you will just be redirected to Zotero's website.)
Zotero Word Add-on
You do not have to install the word processor plugins with Zotero Standalone. The plugins are bundled with the software download.
Zotero Word Plugin Download
- To install the Zotero Standalone software, visit the Zotero download page. Click on the link for your operating system and follow standard procedures for installing software on your computer. Zotero Standalone comes with word processor plugins, so you will not need to install these. Links to install the browser connectors are found just beside the Standalone download links.
- Chrome Connector: A box will appear in the lower right hand corner of the browser asking if you want to continue. Click Continue. Then click Install when Chrome asks if you want to install.
- You will now see Zotero capture icons in the address bar.
- Safari Connector: Depending on your settings Safari may not automatically open the file. Use Control+ Click and select 'Download linked file to...' to save the file to your desktop or some other easy to remember location. Double click the file to open. Click Open, then click Install. The Safari capture icon will show up as a little box to the left of the address bar.
